ONCE: In this innovative, low budget film, a down at heel busker in Dublin meets a shy, eccentric Czech immigrant girl. They share a love of music, and a tentative, complex but tender relationship develops. Moving and uplifting,
but never sentimental or predictable, the film has a spontaneity and charm rarely encountered in modern cinema, creating an intense and memorable experience. The story features original songs composed by the performers, who are musicians rather than actors, giving rise to a superb soundtrack. Winner of the ‘World Cinema Audience Award’ at the Sundance Festival 2007, Once is gaining a deserved reputation as one of the most striking films of recent years.

VENUS: God, he was gorgeous,’ a
waitress sighs when she glimpses Maurice – one of
the aged, still-jobbing actors who frequents her
cafe – photographed in his prime. It’s a vintage
image of Peter O’Toole, whose own persona is
unavoidably interwoven with his character’s in this
sharp-eyed study of lust and death. Maurice’s looks
may have left him – but the arrival of Jessie, the
bolshy teenage great-niece of his old friend Ian
(Leslie Phillips), makes it clear that his appetite
is very much intact. As the ageing lothario sees
fit to broaden the girl’s horizons, a wary rapport
develops between them… A witty and bracing
screenplay well served by a superb cast including
Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Griffiths.

Based on a true story, this inspiring family drama, set in Canada, centres around 13 year old Amy (Anna Paquin). Amy is having difficulty coping with her mother’s recent death and is forced to move in with her estranged father (Jeff Bridges). Whilst struggling to adjust to her new life, Amy stumbles upon a nest of goose eggs and, after nurturing them until they hatch, becomes, literally, their surrogate mother. The geese grow up fast, and Amy realizes that they must be led to a new home. With the help of her eccentric father, Amy devises an extraordinary plan to teach the birds to migrate south, overcoming incredible odds, both human and natural, in the process. This is a heartfelt, moving drama full of hope and determination which holds something for all ages.
This film will be preceded by the short films created in Saturday’s animation workshop.

You don’t have to be a fan of Edith Piaf to be truly moved by this biography of ‘the Sparrow’ – the rags-to-riches to tragic-end story of the singer who became hugely famous in France and beyond for her heartfelt and thrilling songs. The director tracks back and forth in time through Piaf’s gruelling childhood, her survival on the streets of Paris as a young woman singing for her supper, and her rise to fame, fortune, and finally addiction. Marion Cotillard’s depiction of Piaf is exceptional and the music as compelling now as it was 60 years ago.

From the writer of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind comes an even more brilliant and surreal film. Stephane, a naïve and sensitive introvert, finds it hard to distinguish between his bizarre dreams and real life, with the two increasingly overlapping during this engaging and hilarious film. As he struggles with a boring job, he survives a near-fatal accident involving a piano falling down a staircase, and is cared for by two eccentric girls in the next-door flat. Their relationship develops (despite his abysmal chat up lines) as the film explores themes of creativity, imagination, and how artistic idealism conflicts with the demands of everyday life. Totally original, combining live action with stop-motion animation, this mix of fantasy and emotional honesty is like nothing else you will encounter.

A campfire story passed down through generations of Aboriginal tribesmen forms the basis of Ten Canoes, and the structure reflects their oral traditions. The narrator tells us a story (shown in monochrome, similar to 1930s anthropologists’ photos of Aboriginal life) of an expedition in ten canoes. The leader of the expedition in turn tells another mythic tale (in vivid colour) to his younger brother, designed to teach him a lesson about love, revenge and tribal justice. The two tales are intertwined to create a richly-layered drama with beautiful photography, robust humour and candour, and great performances from first-time Aboriginal actors.

Zac is a sensitive lad growing up in a large (five sons), oddball and rowdy Catholic family in French Canada in the 1960s and 70s. One brother is a bookworm, another committed to sport and a third is a morose outsider heading for an early grave by way of bikes, booze and drugs. Zac is born on Christmas Day 1960, and his doting mother leads him to believe he has psychic gifts, whilst his aggressive, homophobic father causes him to doubt his sexuality. As the years go by, the posters on Zac’s bedroom wall change, Bowie giving way to Johnny Rotten, while his father’s attachment to Charles Aznavour and Patsy Cline remains unchanged. An unusual and bizarre film, with some delightfully funny moments and one of the best rock soundtracks in recent memory.

Baraka is an ancient Sufi word, which translates as ‘a blessing’. Baraka is a visually stunning, nonverbal film containing breathtaking shots from around the world. Shot in 70mm format, the quality of the cinematography is outstanding. Coupled with an incredible soundtrack. the film depicts some of the best, and worst, aspects of nature and human life. The film has no plot, contains no actors and has no script, but soon draws the viewer into an intensely spiritual experience. This is a captivatingly beautiful documentary with a global vision - an odyssey through landscape and time, that is an attempt to capture the essence of life. This is a film you will want to tell all your friends to see. Screened with special permission from the producer, Mark Magidson, Baraka is available on DVD from Amazon.

According to ancient texts a Hindu widow had three choices - join her husband on his funeral pyre, marry his brother or go into a widows’ refuge. It is the third option that nine year old Chuyia takes, on the death of her husband in 1938. The refuge is poor, but there is great camaraderie amongst the women. Though the film does not denigrate the religion, it does question particular beliefs, and Deepa Mehta overcame huge hurdles to create this visually stunning and poignant film. She was prevented from filming in India and the film was banned there and in Pakistan. Oscar nominated, Water is dramatic with mystery and secrets, but contains dashes of hope, laughter and tender moments. It is a human story with much kindness at its heart. It also prompts us to realize how lucky we are - to appreciate the equality and abundance that we have.

One of the best of Harold Lloyd’s action comedies, this film tells the charming tale of a country boy out to make his fortune in New York, and the adventures that befall him, leading hilariously to the legendary clock-hanging climax. Safety Last is accompanied live by the first performance of a specially commissioned score by local composer JAMES HARPHAM (who needs no introduction to our festival audience) on piano, with Christopher Gradwell on clarinet. Weaving together music from the golden age of jazz and ragtime, contemporary to the film, as well as classical and original pieces, this witty and engaging score complements the film to provide a unique and memorable performance.

An unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, this is so much more than just the original (and best) horror film. A real-estate transaction lures the naïve hero deep into the superstitious heart of Transylvania, where he encounters the other-wordly Count Orlock, and unwittingly unleashes the Count upon his homeland, leading to a desperate fight between good and evil. This iconic, dark and mesmerising film is filled with hauntingly surreal images and powerful themes and undercurrents. This newly restored and multi-tinted print is accompanied by the first ever recording of the original 1922 score, providing a rare opportunity to experience this film as it was originally intended by the director.
